How to stop your tattoo from fading

How To Stop Your Tattoo From Fading

A question we are often asked is how do I prevent my tattoo from fading?

Here’s the Outliers Ink guide on getting your tattoo to age well, and keep it looking as vibrant as possible.

1. Follow Aftercare Instructions

  • Initial care matters: It doesn’t matter that we are the best tattoo artists in Birmingham. 😎 If you go home and decide not to follow the aftercare, you may as well have thrown your money down the drain instead.
  • Clean your tattoo: Gently with a mild soap, pat dry, and apply Outliers Ink tattoo Butter
  • Avoid picking or scratching: Let scabs fall off naturally. Picking can cause ink loss or scarring.

2. Keep Your Skin Moisturised

  • Hydration = longevity: Dry skin leads to dull-looking ink. Use a moisturiser regularly.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking water keeps your skin (and tattoo) healthy from the inside out.

3. Protect It from the Sun

  • Use sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to your tattoo anytime it’s exposed to sunlight—even after your tattoo is healed.
  • Avoid excessive sun: It is critical during healing, to keep your tattoo out of direct sun. UV rays break down ink pigments.

4. Choose a Good Tattoo Artist

Quality matters: Experienced artists like the ones here at Outliers Ink Birmingham, take factors such as how your tattoo will heal over time, into consideration from the initial design stage. We use quality, vivid tattoo inks and techniques that keep the clarity of your tattoo. Whether you have chosen to have a fine-line tattoo, a pastel colour tattoo, a bold blackwork tattoo, or black and grey tattoo, follow these key steps to keep your tattoo looking as good as new.
