There are two non-negotiable rules for a healed piercing: never remove your jewellery during healing, and always start with titanium. Get those two right, and you’ll avoid almost every problem people run into: a healing piercing that closes within minutes if the jewellery comes out, complications from cartilage and nose piercings (the highest-risk spots), and reactions from cheaper metals that titanium, being nickel-free and hypoallergenic, simply doesn’t cause. This is the standard we hold at Outliers Ink, a tattoo and piercing studio in Bearwood, Birmingham, serving Quinton, Harborne, and Oldbury.
The Two Rules That Prevent Almost Every Piercing Problem
Two things matter more than anything else while a piercing’s healing: leave the jewellery alone, and make sure it’s titanium to begin with. Get those two right and most of the problems people run into just don’t happen.
Why Removing Jewellery Mid-Heal Can Close the Hole in Minutes
Here’s what people don’t get: a healing piercing isn’t a fixed little tunnel just sat there waiting for you. It’s tissue that’s actively trying to close itself back up, and the only thing stopping it is the jewellery sitting in it. Take it out, even briefly, even “just to clean underneath,” and that hole can tighten up fast. Sometimes within minutes. Try putting it back in twenty minutes later and it’s suddenly not going back in the way it came out.
Cartilage and Nose Piercings Are the Highest Risk, But the Rule Never Changes
Cartilage and nose piercings are the worst for this, they’re the ones people can’t leave alone. But the rule’s the same everywhere: lobe, navel, nipple, dermal, doesn’t matter what it is. Jewellery stays in. Full stop.
If it needs cleaning, it gets cleaned exactly where it is. Saline, left to sit a moment, wiped gently. There is no version of “take it out and clean it properly” that ends well. None.
Why Titanium Is the Only Jewellery Worth Piercing With
And while we’re on jewellery, it’s also why we only pierce with titanium. It doesn’t react with your body the way cheaper metals can, and it doesn’t carry the nickel that a lot of “surgical steel” or gold-plated pieces do. It gives you the best shot at healing without complications, which is exactly why it’s the standard at any studio worth going to. We stock a proper range of it in-store too, plenty of colours and finishes, so when you are ready to change something, you’re not stuck online guessing what’s actually safe to put in.
When It’s Time to Change Your Jewellery, Ask Your Piercer First
If you think it’s ready to be changed, that’s a conversation you have with your piercer, not something you decide with a bottle of wine in your hand and a mirror and some free time. Find out more about piercing healing time here.
