Thinking about tattooing over a scar? Here’s our honest breakdown of what works, what doesn’t, and how to get it right.
Can You Tattoo Over Scars?
In short, yes, most of the time you can, but it depends on the scars age, texture, and how your skin healed.
Flat, fully healed scars that are at least 12 months old are generally good to go. Raised, keloid, or scars that are still changing will need more time. We won’t tattoo over a scar that is still changing, as the tattoo process may actually make this worse. Rushing it also risks poor ink retention or an uneven result, neither of which is what anyone wants. If you’re unsure what type of scar you have, the NHS has a useful overview.
When in doubt, come in for a consultation rather than trying to figure it out yourself. It’s worth taking the time to do this right. People have scars for a number of reasons but if you’re considering tattooing over it, then the idea is to make it look better than it does currently.
What Makes a Great Scar Cover Up Tattoo Design?
The best tattoos to cover up scars work with the scar, not against it. Dense florals, bold botanical work, dark shading, and designs with organic flowing lines all tend to hold up brilliantly over uneven texture. Solid areas of black are particularly effective at evening out discolouration.
Very fine line work and light, delicate designs are harder to execute over scar tissue, not impossible, but they need an artist with specific experience in this kind of work rather than general tattooing. The goal is a tattoo you’d have wanted regardless of what’s underneath it, not just a fix.
Forearm Scar Cover Up Tattoos
The forearm is one of the best placements for scar cover up work. Good surface area, skin that heals reliably well, and a shape that naturally suits longer flowing designs, think botanical panels, sleeves, floral wraps. We do a lot of this work and the results consistently speak for themselves.
Breast Scar Cover Up Tattoos
Breast scar tattoo cover ups, post-mastectomy, lumpectomy, or breast reduction, are some of the most rewarding work we do. The designs range from full chest pieces to softer, more delicate work that frames the scar rather than completely covers it. This is an area where timing matters a lot. Breast Cancer Now has guidance on when tattooing is appropriate after reconstruction. It’s worth reading before you book anywhere.
Tummy Tuck Scar Cover Up Tattoos
Tummy tuck scars run low across the abdomen and can be quite long, but tattoo scar cover up work here is very achievable with the right planning. We’d generally suggest waiting 18–24 months post-surgery before tattooing over it. Skin elasticity and placement are both factors that affect how the tattoo ages, so this is a conversation worth having in person. We’ve done plenty of these all with amazing results.
Feminine Scar Cover Up Tattoos
Feminine scar cover ups look different for everyone, soft watercolour botanicals for some, bold clean linework for others. There’s no single answer your style is individual to you. So what matters is that the design feels like you, not just a cover up. Have a look at some of our custom tattoos to see what style resonates with you if you’re still unsure. https://outliers.ink/tattoos-birmingham/
No Regrets Tattoo Work
A no regrets tattoo isn’t just a cliché, it’s the standard we hold scar cover up work to. The clients who are happiest are the ones who waited until the scar was ready, chose a design they genuinely loved, and went to an artist with real experience in this area. Like our lead tattoo artist Sheine.
For certain scar types, our SMP scar camouflage post is worth a look, particularly for surgical scarring like FUT strip scars from hair transplants.
