I would love to say that Tattooing Black skin (or darker skin tones more broadly) has evolved considerably in recent years. Unfortunately, according to the previous experience of many of our customers, that is disappointingly not the case.
Few things grind my gears as much as some of the horror stories and ignorance around this topic. So let’s put this to bed. Tattooing black skin is entirely possible and tattooing should be available and accessible to everyone including melanin-rich people. Tattooing should be inclusive and here at Outliers Ink, it is. Not only are we inclusive to everyone, gay, straight, black, disabled or trans. The artwork is exceptional which is equally as important and deserved.
Tattooing Black Skin Is Absolutely Possible. Fact.
Outliers ink is proof that tattooing black or darker skin tones is entirely possible and can yield beautiful results. And I don’t want to hear anything else contrary. Lingering stereotypical claims that tattoos don’t “work” or won’t look good on darker skin — is FALSE. The key is that the artist must understand how pigment interacts with different levels of melanin. Just like our lead tattoo artist Sheine.

Artist Skill and Experience Matter Greatly. Fact.
A knowledgeable tattoo artist will tell you that tattooing Black skin requires:
- Adjusting technique (linework and shading for example).
- Choosing suitable colours and contrast.
- Understanding undertones and how ink heals on melanin-rich skin.
Experience counts. Fact
Not all artists are equally skilled at tattooing across the full spectrum of black and brown skin tones. I cannot emphasise enough the importance of seeking artists who have a portfolio showing fresh and healed work on darker skin. It is important they showcase their pride in tattooing black skin. Are there an acceptable amount of pictures on Instagram for example? And if there isn’t, is it because they don’t have the experience? Or are they not proud of the work? Tips for Finding the Right Tattoo Artist
Look for a diverse portfolio
Check the artist’s Instagram or website.
Do they show healed tattoos on darker skin? Fresh tattoos can look bright on any skin — healed results show real skill.
Ask direct questions
Good artists welcome this: “Do you have experience tattooing Black skin? May I see healed examples?” Be wary if they get defensive or dismissive.
Don’t settle
- If an artist seems unsure, says “it won’t show up well,” or advises against colour without offering solutions — move on.
- Avoid picking an artist only based on proximity or price
- Experience with darker skin should be a top priority. This is on your body for life, buy cheap, buy twice. The amount of times we’ve had to fix shoddy work. Do yourself a favour and do it right the first time.
